This book is an overview of outside events that affected the
establishment of the early Church, from the earliest period as evidenced by
early examples of epitaphs from all walks of life. Orazio Marucchi Professor
of Christian Archaeology in the Royal University of Rome places emphasis on
the work of De Rossi as introduced in 1912. An immense contribution that
shows the great extent De Rossi made by preserving this valuable ancient
Church material. Within these pages are depicted the plight of the early
Christians in the Catacombs of Rome. The period covered extends from the
earlier pagan period to the earliest Christian era up until the Middle Ages.
The Enigma of Pope Damasus, his special care to protect the sanctuaries of
the martyrs and restoration of their tombs. He was a conscientious historian.
Many of the inscriptions catalogued herein have since been lost to the
ravages of time.
